We're Here to Help You See Your Best.

A Medical Eye Exam is designed to evaluate or treat you for medical conditions that may affect your vision or resolve issues beyond those related to your eyeglass prescription. Common medical conditions that require a medical eye exam include: diabetes, glaucoma, cataracts, dry eye, macular degeneration, and conjunctivitis (pink eye). These tests are performed by either an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist. Medical Eye Exams are billed to the patient’s medical insurance. Please reach out to one of our care professionals with any questions regarding your insurance.

Medical Eye Exams are tailored to the medical condition being evaluated.

Some conditions, such as diabetes, require a dilated exam. Other eye issues, such as glaucoma, may require special testing. These are some of the common elements that may be used or tested during a medical eye exam.

Visual Acuity – Testing how well you see currently (please bring your glasses with you for your exam).

Refraction – Using different lenses to sharpen focus and needed to generate a glasses prescription.

Visual Function – This includes testing depth perception, color vision, peripheral vision, and the response of the pupils to light, as well as an evaluation of eye focusing, eye teaming, and eye movement abilities.

External Exam – This is an evaluation of the whites of your eyes, the iris, pupil, eyelids, and eyelashes.

Internal Exam – This is an evaluation of the retina and optic nerve while your eyes are dilated. We also offer a wellness screening (for an additional charge, not covered by insurance) that provides additional information on the health of the optic nerve and macula.

Eye Pressure Testing – This is a test of fluid pressure within your eyes. High pressure is a risk factor for developing glaucoma.

Optical Coherence Tomography – This device uses light waves to give three-dimensional (3-D) pictures of structures inside of the eye. It is often used for diagnosis, evaluation and monitoring of retinal and optic nerve conditions.

Visual Field Test – This device tests vision differently than an eye chart. A series of bright and dim lights are shown in different areas to map out the sensitivity and the size of your field of vision. This is used most commonly for diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma.

Corneal Topography – this device maps the shape of the cornea – the clear window that is the front of the eye. Certain conditions can cause an abnormal shape which is then not correctable with standard eyeglasses.

Medical Eye Exams evaluate vision and eye health for a variety of medical conditions.

The inside of the eye has the potential to develop its own conditions and diseases which can lead to blindness or greatly impaired vision. Glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, corneal dystrophy, retinal detachments, etc., are all medical issues with the eyes, not things that can be fixed with glasses or contacts. A medical eye exam differs from a routine vision exam in that it is an exam where we’re evaluating or treating a patient for some sort of medical condition. Many medical insurances do not cover the cost of determining your glasses prescription (refraction). Often the refraction charge is an out-of-pocket expense at the time of a medical eye exam.
